Custom Spring-Energized Seals.
Custom Spring-Energized Lip Seals – Precision, Performance & Reliability
At Oz Seals, we design and manufacture custom spring-energized lip seals for superior sealing performance across a wide range of industries. Built to withstand the harshest environments, our seals combine advanced polymer materials such as PTFE, UHMW-PE, and PEEK with precision-engineered springs to deliver consistent sealing, low friction, and long service life.
Whether you operate in aerospace, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, food processing, semiconductors, or heavy machinery, Oz Seals provides tailored solutions that meet the unique challenges of your industry.
How Spring-Energized Lip Seals Work
Spring-energized seals consist of a high-performance polymer jacket and a corrosion-resistant spring. The spring applies constant radial or axial force, keeping the lips firmly engaged with the hardware surface. This design:
- Compensates for wear, tolerances, and eccentricities
- Provides reliable sealing even at low pressures
- Maintains performance in wide temperature ranges
- Reduces leakage compared to conventional seals
The result is sealing reliability under extreme pressures, temperatures, and media exposure.
Features & Operating Ranges
- Temperature capability: −250 °C to +320 °C (depending on material)
- Static pressures: up to ~3500 bar
- Dynamic pressures: up to ~550 bar
- Surface speed: up to 50 m/s in rotary or reciprocating service (depending on material)
- Diameter range: 2 mm up to 2000 mm
- Media compatibility: Virtually all liquids, gases, solvents, and aggressive chemicals
- Friction: Low stick-slip effect with excellent wear resistance
Seal Types & Design Options
Radial Seals
- Standard with inserted coil spring and symmetrical lips
- Scraper-edge variants for rod or piston service
- Reinforced back designs for high-pressure systems
- Retaining flange seals to prevent rotation
- Encapsulated spring options for hygienic (FDA/food-grade) use
V-Spring Seals
- Symmetrical lip design for general sealing
- Scraper edges for fluid separation
- Chamfered lips for dosing and precision fluid handling
- Flange designs for better hardware retention
Axial Seals
- Designed for internal or external pressure/vacuum
- Swivel-joint styles for slow dynamic or static sealing
- Full-contact spring or steel ring reinforcement for stability
Material / Jacket Options
Oz Seals offers a wide range of jacket materials to match application requirements:
| Material Type | Key Properties |
| Virgin PTFE | Excellent low-temperature capability, low friction, wide chemical resistance, FDA approved. Best for static or moderate dynamics. |
| Modified PTFE | Improved creep resistance and lower gas permeability. Strong chemical resistance and better under stress. |
| PTFE + Carbon / Graphite fillers | Excellent in hot water, steam, and poor-lubrication conditions. Handles higher temperatures effectively. |
| PTFE + Glass fibre & MoS₂ | High abrasion resistance, suitable for hydraulics, water, and steam. |
| Special filled PTFE | Reinforced for high-temperature and high-speed service. |
| UHMW-PE | High wear resistance, good for abrasive or water-based media, FDA compliant, suitable for food & pharma. |
| PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) | Premium choice for extreme applications. Outstanding mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and wear resistance at high temperatures. Excellent under high pressure, aggressive chemicals, and heavy loads. Ideal for aerospace, oilfield exploration, and high-performance machinery. |
